Excerpt from Leadership Training journal Debsconeag is a place of total unselfconsciousness. I am walking through a forest, the flooding rains have withdrawn, mud squishes up and around my boots. Through the trees and around the lake-4th Debsconeag being the only thing around here which bears reflection. Debsconeag is a place of total unselfconsciousness, there are no mirrors here. I speak freely and often, loudly. I sing. I cannot see what my face looks like to others, only that they smile to see it and I know that I am smiling in return, to see them, their light. Debsconeag is a place of total unselfconsciousness. I often struggle to explain the magic of this place to people who have never been here- I can feel my own transformation as a blooming in the thick of summer. And there are are no mirrors here- here there’s no need to transform yourself for the people around you. It’s possible to be realer here than anywhere else, because of the safety of this small community, and the trust we build with each other.
