The Semester 50 students have started work on two canoes for restoration. One is a 1911 Old Town HW model, donated to us by Jean Hayes. The second is a Rowing Canoe, effectively an HW with sponsons. This canoe is a 1942 and was donated to us by Brian Kent. We look forward to both boats joining us at Debsconeag Lake this summer for campers to use. Both Canoes are in good shape and need little structural repair. Both have torn canvases, and we will try to repair the canvas in lieu of replacing. If that fails, we will replace. Students took out the seats and thwarts and got down to sanding. A tedious task, yet necessary. Sanding is being done by hand, especially on the ribs, as electric sanders cause too much damage to the wood, boats are best done with good old fashioned hand sanding.
