July 6th, 2009 Our wonderful Kitchen Manager and cook, Blair, asked to have some helpers for breakfast. We were instantly overwhelmed by the amount of campers eagerly wanting to get up early and bake muffins! So, we set up an essay contest, 200-word essay in which they had to write why they should be the ones chosen to make muffins at 6am for the entire camp. Of the ten campers in camp, we received 5 essays from the girls (two more were written and never submitted but are waiting in their yurts). Here are a few excerpts: I Anna M. want to make muffins. Why? Well I love to cook. I have had some experience. 1. I cook rhubarb PIE with my dad, 2. I cook cookies with my grandmother, 3. This morning I helped make one of the BEST apple crumble the world has ever seen. I would really like to cook at 6:00am with Blair because 1. I really enjoy cooking and 2. I have many experiences including this morning when I did my 1st activity with Vanessa and Erica and made apple crumble. I would not mind to wake up early and missing my first polar bear. …. And, also, I would LOOOVVEEEE cleaning the dishes I mean I love doing dishes, no kidding. … Lily N. I would like to be chosen to wake up at 6:00am and be on cook crew for many reasons, which I will explain in this essay… First, I love cooking. At home sometimes I make food for my family. People tell me I make very good food… Second, I can wake up at six…Next, I think that the food here is so delicious and I have always wanted to help out in the kitchen…I also can listen very well to instructions. I got all A’s in school… In conclusion, I would really like to wake up at six and be on cook crew… Amanda C. Cook Crew by Linnie S. I want to be on the cook crew. I love to cook! I make cookies all the time, and my dad swears by my biscuits. I have also been asking Blair to make strawberry rhubarb somethings for ever. So, this is the perfect opportunity. Why I want to Cook by Julie M. I want to cook because it would be fun and it would get me out of bed early. Once someone tells me what to do and how much to put in of each ingredient, I can cook food easily… I also measure ingredients (cups, liters, etc.) exactly. If the milk is at the 1 cup line and the recipe says 1.5 cups, I will do the 1.5 cups mark… Blair read them all and was so impressed that he decided to divide the tasks and have all of the girls join him in the kitchen at 6am. Together they all made some of the most delicious strawberry rhubarb spelt flour muffins!!
