Future Leaders
The summer of 2011, Chewonki Camp for Girls hopes to begin the first ever Leadership Program for Girls. The Leadership Program equips former and interested campers with skills to be leaders within Chewonki and beyond. Participants in this program will receive basic medical certifications and in-field training ranging from activity facilitation to wilderness camping. Throughout the summer the Leadership Program participants will follow a progression to take on more responsibility as they gain experience.
For the first part of the summer, girls will live together with their leader. During this session they will focus on learning skills that they will need in order to move into a more prominent leadership role for the campers in the second session. They will receive training from the leaders and other trained staff on site. There will be weekly updates and meetings to ensure they are on track and aware of their accomplishments.
Participants will be trained specifically in group management, activity facilitation, communication, wilderness tripping and trip prep, and group living supervision. As a group, they will participate in one wilderness trip in the first session and then assist on a wilderness trip in the second session. They will assist in daily life with campers in activities and the dining hall. Additionally they will be a yurt “Friend” and take on leadership in individual groups.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a young woman who is ready to take on more leadership in the community, for someone who is excited to learn the systems of running a smooth and safe camp experience, and for someone who is ready to share her gifts, skills, and interests with younger girls. The Girls Camp community is excited about adding this new dimension of excitement, energy, and learning into our small community.
