After a string of steamy days and soggy nights today was, by any measure, a simply glorious day! And the weather stations report that starry nights and sunny days are in the forecast for several days. Hooray!!! By now, all of our trips have checked in at least once and report that high spirits, growing friendships, and a spirit of teamwork are supporting their trip experiences in positive ways!
The Allagash participants and their leaders were all smiles when they were dropped off at Lobster Lake – eager to get on with their adventure! They camped that first night of the trip on Thoreau Island. From there each day they paddled fairly steadily from Lone Pine, to Pine Stream, to Gero Island where the group enjoyed a well-deserved rest day. Sunday, they were all back in their canoes paddling on to Canvas Dam and will spend the Fourth of July on Horserace Island. Their resupply is coming up soon and we are excited to meet up, hear their stories, and check in with the group.
On Wednesday morning, the Maine Woods Explorer participants left the campus bound for our property at Big Eddy – just outside of Baxter State Park where they have spent several days base camping. Their day hikes included places like: Pond, The Owl, and Blueberry Ledges – where the views from the top are worth any effort it took to get there! On Sunday they put away their hiking boots and spent the day at Big Eddy practicing their canoe skills and continued those lessons at Debsconeag Falls. They begin a longer practicum on the fourth at Debsconeag Lake camp, taking a few days to paddle back to Big Eddy in time for their resupply.
