We love healthy food that’s also scrumptious, and meals are a special time to share a sense of community. Our cooks prepare food from scratch, incorporating lots of organic food from the Chewonki farm and other Maine farms. We eat our meals sitting down at tables in the comfortable lodge, just yards from the shore of Fourth Debsconeag Lake.
More than a Dining Hall: A Community
At least two staff members are assigned to a table to help facilitate the meal. Each meal campers draw cards for their table assignment rather than sit by cabin group. This mixed seating approach allows campers of different ages to get to know each other, as well an opportunity for staff to interact with a wider group of campers. We enter the dining hall together and wait to start the meal until we share a reading or song that focuses on community, the natural world or personal growth. Meals are served family style.
Wilderness Trip Meals
Trip leaders create menus with care, drawing from Chewonki’s own wilderness trip cookbook. Everyone shares in food preparation over campfires and gas camp stoves. Meals may include pizza, burritos, macaroni and cheese (from scratch), fruit, vegetable stir-fry, freshly baked desserts, couscous, soup and biscuits, hummus, veggie wraps, scrambled eggs, English muffins, and more.
Fresh foods are limited after three or four days, but we strive for balance by using dehydrated and/or long-lasting fruits and vegetables, canned chicken or fish, and alternative protein sources. Trips of more than ten days receive a resupply.
A Note About Meals:
We accommodate dietary needs whenever possible and want to know if your child has allergies, diabetes, or any other condition that makes special food necessary.
Please contact us to discuss these needs at least one month ahead of the start of her camp or trip. We want to make meals as enjoyable and satisfying as possible for everyone on the trip.
