Today we welcome guests Willard Morgan and his family Jenn Barton and Sierra. They have stopped by for a visit while en route to return to Wiscasset after visiting other Chewonki sites. Jenn will be part of our staff during second session and Sierra a future camper we hope. All of them joined the campers for a swim this afternoon; it was the perfect day for a swim. Dot Lamson’s sister Sally came by for a visit as well and the two of them had a little family time in a sailboat. Also a great day for sailing. Trillium and their leaders spend a lot of their day packing and loading gear for their trip; they all head to Lobster Lake for a 4 day canoe trip starting tomorrow. The campers were able to take some timeto draw out a food map to show how seeds become lettuce and go to market, to table and back again as compost and dirt. Today we enjoyed some of the lettuce that the girls picked at Jason’s Green Ledges Farm yesterday. The Clintonia campers are on the West Branch of the Penobscot camping on Big Island. They are near the Corydalis group who are on Gero Island in the same waterway. They took a stop at Chesuncook village, famous for it’s homemade ice cream and root beer. The Northstars had a couple of portages on their trip today, while the Penopscot White Water group ventured to Saboomook and roll dam. Chewonki Wilderness Trip Maine Appalachian Trail group is only 2 miles from us, so our program director Addie Liddic went for a run and said hello. She took with her fresh blueberry muffins made by our cook Sarah Burgess. YUM! It is fun to be so close to the wilderness and have other Chewonki folks nearby. We’ve had a great day at camp with lots of water activities.
